Welcome to the Department of Theoretical Physics!
Our department was established with the objective of developing and pioneering advanced fundamental science education and research in Bangladesh. History shows that all technologically advanced nations today, without exception, first prioritized basic science. Technological excellence follows the practice of fundamental science, and there is no substitute for it if we aim to develop new technologies instead of merely importing them from abroad.
Every year, more scientists studying basic science receive Nobel Prizes compared to professionals in fields like medicine or engineering. One significant by-product of practicing basic science is the internalization of the scientific method, which plays a crucial role in shaping a rational and science-minded generation.
In the context of Bangladesh, students in any science department generally fall into three categories:
1) Those pursuing a degree as a qualification.
2) Those who plan to apply their acquired knowledge in their future careers (though opportunities for this are quite limited in our country).
3) Those who wish to delve deeper into the subject and are interested in higher education and research.
As higher theoretical physics is a vast field, our department primarily caters to the third group. Despite many challenges, our department has achieved considerable success. A prime example is the increasing number of brilliant students joining our department from disciplines other than physics. Many of them have completed their studies here and have gone on to pursue higher education in theoretical physics at world-renowned universities. Several have already obtained PhDs, while many others are engaged in postdoctoral research and even joined as Tenure-track faculty at top universities.
We hope that in the near future, even more of our graduates will make significant contributions to the overall development of our country with their talent and expertise.
