A Brief Introduction to the Department of Islamic Studies
The Department of Islamic Studies is a prestigious department at the University of Dhaka. It is one of the few departments with which the University came into existence. It was once called the ‘Corner Stone’ of the University. Initially, it was coupled with the Arabic, but later on, emerged as an independent department.
The Vision of the Department is disseminating Islamic education and producing virtuous citizens for the country. Over the years, it produced many world-renowned Islamic thinkers. Dr Syed Muazzam Hossain, a teacher of the Department, served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Dhaka.
The Department has been offering B. A (Honors), Master’s, M. Phil and Ph. D Degrees. One ‘M. A. (Evening) Program’ has also been going on since 2017.
The Department has a time-befitting curriculum incorporating Islamic and modern education. It has two classrooms with modern multimedia facilities, one Seminar Library currently having approximately 5000 volumes of valuable books and a Computer Lab having 20 computers with modern facilities. The Seminar Library and Computer Lab, built on the department's own financing, were established under the initiative of the late Chairman Professor Dr Muhammad Ruhul Amin.
