Dr. Mohammad Mainul Islam is a professor and former Chairman of the Department of Population Sciences at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, with over 24 years of experience in Population and Development, Demography, Sociology, Global Health, Public Health, and China Studies. Professor Islam served as the Project Director for the Strengthening the Capacity of Teaching and Research Facilities at the Department of Population Sciences, University of Dhaka (Second Phase), a project funded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Ministry of Education, Government of Bangladesh, from 2018 to 2021. He was an elected member of the Syndicate—the University of Dhaka's highest decision-making body— for two consecutive terms between 2010 and 2014. He is currently a member of the Syndicate of Comilla University (nominated by the Government of Bangladesh for the 2025-2026 term).

Professor Islam completed the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) in the Science Group at Mirzapur Cadet College (MCC) and later received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Sociology from the University of Dhaka. He received his PhD in Demography from Peking University, China. Later, he completed a Global Health Research Capacity Strengthening Program Postdoctoral Fellowship at McGill University, Canada. Dr. Islam also received training at the Johns Hopkins Fall Institute in Barcelona (Universitat Pompeu Fabra), Stanford University, Brown University, the University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM), the University of Laval, the University of Bergen, and Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU).

Professor M. M. Islam was recognized as one of the top 2% scientists on Elsevier and Stanford University's list in 2025. In recognition of his academic achievements, he received the 'First Prize of Academic Excellence Award' from Peking University. In 2010, he was named the Nick Simons Scholar of the New Investigator in Global Health program of the Global Health Council (GHC) in the United States. He is a two-time winner of the New Voices in Global Health (NVGH) program, receiving the accolade in 2014 and 2016 at the World Health Summit (WHS) in Berlin, Germany.

He contributed to over 94 scientific publications, including a research book. He also wrote nearly 100 op-eds in reputable newspapers such as Daily Prothom Alo and the Daily Star. He is currently working with Springer Nature as a corresponding editor on the upcoming edited book, Bangladesh's Social Transformations as a New Nation. He made more than 200 scientific presentations at conferences and professional meetings worldwide. He was one of the members of the 'Task Force' constituted by the interim government to formulate and implement recommendations for the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and the Statistics and Informatics Division (SID) of the Ministry of Planning, through discussions on the quality, transparency, and availability of produced statistics, April 28- September 21, 2025. The Government of Bangladesh also appointed him to the Executive Committee of the National Population Council (NPC) in March 2025. He is also a member of the Population Expert Committee (PEC) for Integrating Population Dynamics and Development Issues into National Plans and Policies (PD4Development) Project, General Economic Division (GED), Planning Commission, Ministry of Planning.

Professor Islam is involved with various scientific professional associations, including the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP), the Asian Population Association (APA), and the International Sociological Association (ISA). Prof. Islam was a Member of the Scientific Group of the Asian Population Association (APA): Changing Household Structure, Aging, and Well-being in Western and Southern Asia, 2022-2024, and currently a Member of the Scientific Group on Climate Mobilities, Migrants and Health, Asian Population Association (APA), 2025-2027.

He serves as a consultant to the Government and various United Nations agencies, including the UNFPA Bangladesh, the General Economic Division (GED) of the Planning Commission, the Director General of Family Planning (DGFP) of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. As a national consultant of UNFPA Bangladesh, Dr. Islam played the key role in developing the first Bangladesh National Planning Strategy, 2025-2030. He was also a key member of the technical committee of the National Guideline for the Prevention of Son Preference and the Risk of Gender-Biased Sex Selection, 2022.

Professor Islam is a regularly invited speaker in various government training programs for higher-level government officials at the Planning Commission, National Defence College (NDC), Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), Director General of Family Planning (DGFP), Bangladesh Public Service Training Centre (BPATC), National Academy for Development Administration (NADA), National Academy for Planning and Development (NAPD), and the Parliament Secretariat, among others.

His work broadly focuses on population and development, social demography, reproductive health, global health, population and health policies and programs, urban health, population dynamics, climate change, displaced and ethnic populations, and Sinology/China studies.
