Dr. Md. Shariful Islam, son of Md. Rafiqul Islam and Ayesha Akter, hails from Comilla,
Bangladesh. He completed his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) from Barashar High
School, Burichang, Comilla, and his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) from Notre Dame
College, Dhaka. He married Asma Akter on October 10, 2008, and together they have three
daughters — Marium, Mahreen, and Mahdiya.
Dr. Islam earned his Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Mathematics from the University of
Dhaka in 2004, followed by a Master of Science in Pure Mathematics from the same
university in 2005. He then pursued advanced studies at Texas Christian University (TCU),
Fort Worth, Texas, U.S.A., where he obtained a Master of Science in Mathematics in 2013 and
a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mathematics in 2019. His doctoral research was conducted
under the supervision of Professor Ken Richardson, Ph.D. He began his academic career at the
Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), serving as a Lecturer (2007–2011) in the School
of Engineering and Computer Science (SECS). During his doctoral studies, he worked as a
Graduate Instructor at Texas Christian University (2014–2018). Since November 2018, Dr.
Islam has been serving at the Department of Mathematics, University of Dhaka. Dr. Islam’s
research interests encompass topological geometric analysis, dynamical systems, and the
mathematical foundations of data science, with a particular focus on providing rigorous
mathematical validation for data-driven research. Through his academic excellence, leadership,
and dedication to teaching and research, Dr. Md. Shariful Islam stands as a prominent
contributor to the advancement of mathematics in Bangladesh and beyond.
In 2022, Dr. Islam led the Bangladesh Team to the 29th International Mathematics
Competition (IMC) held in Bulgaria, organized by University College London (UCL), where
Bangladesh achieved an impressive 10th place among hundreds of undergraduate mathematics
teams from around the world. He continues to serve as the Coach of the Bangladesh IMC
Team, fostering and guiding young mathematical talents.
