After 13 years of service as a faculty member, it is an honor for me to lead our department, which is known for excellence in learning, innovation, and engagement. We have achieved significant progress toward advancing cutting-edge research and providing our students with unparalleled educational opportunities since the department's inception in 2003 under the Faculty of Pharmacy.
The department is committed to providing a world-class education that integrates rigorous coursework with professional development, teamwork, and ethics in order to become a nationally and internationally recognized program that is actively engaged in teaching, research, and community service. The goal of this healthcare education is to produce innovative and collaborative healthcare professionals who will strengthen healthcare systems across the globe.
Prospective students who have successfully completed the five-year Bachelor of Professional Pharmacy (B. Pharm.) program at the Department of Pharmacy, University of Dhaka, are eligible to enroll in our one-year rigorous academic M. Pharm. (Master of Pharmacy) program. Graduates of professional schools in pharmacy and medicine may also enroll in Master of Philosophy (M. Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.). Because they demand the best of themselves, our faculty members are able to provide instruction and guidance in a wide variety of fields.
The faculty of this department is actively engaged in comprehensive research across a wide range of topics. The department houses six state-of-the-art research labs: the Advanced Pharmacology Lab, the Chemical Biology and DNA Research Lab, the Ethnopharmacology Research Lab, the Molecular Genetics Lab, the Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacogenomics Lab, and the Synthetic Chemistry Lab. Principal areas of research interest include cancer biology, molecular and genomic sciences, toxicology, drug-protein interaction, chemistry and pharmacology of synthetic and natural products, bioactivity-guided phytochemical investigation, research on cardiovascular diseases focusing on hypertension, diabetes and liver diseases, rational use of drugs, and other clinical research. Many of our graduate and undergraduate students participate in faculty-led research projects each year, which attracts significant external funding. The primary goals of research include knowledge gathering and dissemination with the ultimate goals of improving patient care, safe medication, preventing disease, modernizing treatment, and increasing the quality and cost-effectiveness of healthcare systems. Furthermore, novel findings derived from research are utilized to develop, evaluate, and enhance health policy, models of pharmacy education, and models of health care delivery.
The current staff, students, and alumni are all sources of tremendous pride for the department, and we anticipate additional expansion thanks to rising enrollment, state-of-the-art classroom and lab space, and expanding opportunities for interdisciplinary study.
