The Department of Japanese Studies has a proud tradition of academic excellence, impactful co-curricular activities, and a commitment to nurturing future leaders not only in the field of Japanese language, history and culture, but also Japan’s economy, politics, business management, governance system etc. It gives me great pleasure to share a few words on the importance and continued growth of Japanese Studies within our institution and beyond. In an increasingly interconnected world, the study of Japan—its language, history, culture, society, and technological innovations—offers valuable insights not only into one of Asia’s most influential nations but also into global trends in modernization, tradition, and resilience. Japanese studies promote intercultural understanding and offer a crucial forum for scholarly discussion and respect for one another. We are reminded of the richness and breadth this discipline offers to academics, students, and the general public whether we study ancient literature like The Tale of Genji, investigate Zen Buddhist ideas, or discuss Japan's leadership in science and technology. We prioritize our students above all. Our students are encouraged to explore innovative ideas, think sensibly and take on new challenges without fear.
Our faculty members are not only passionate teachers, but also active researchers whose works contribute to both local and global knowledge. Their unwavering mentorship helps build a strong academic community where creativity, curiosity and diligence are deeply valued. The department is equipped with advanced facilities, including a dedicated Japanese Language Laboratory and a Computer Laboratory, designed to support comprehensive language instruction and academic research.
We continuously strive to enhance our academic modules, research initiative and community engagement efforts. Our vision is to create a dynamic environment that supports the personal professional growth of every student and faculty.
Additionally, the Department has established valuable partnerships with prestigious organizations such as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), the Japan-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industries (JBCCI), Shaplaneer, the Bangladesh Ikebana Association, Rotary Public and the Kazuko Bhuiyan Welfare Trust. Further enriching the academic journey, the Department offers exchange programs with esteemed Japanese universities such as Sophia University, Kobe University, Kwansei Gakuin University, Nagoya University, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Shimani University, and Nara Women's University. Notably, our students have the privilege of receiving prestigious Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarships for Master's and Ph.D. programs and short-term scholarships for certificate and diploma programs in Japan. These collaborations provide our students with exceptional opportunities for employment, internships, scholarships, and exchange programs.
As Chair, I am committed to the advancement of our department, with a vision to establish it as a premier center of excellence in Japanese Studies. We remain dedicated to fostering innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and impactful research on Japan’s evolving relationship with Bangladesh and the Asia-Pacific region.
