Dr. Mohammed Moniruzzaman Khan

Warm greetings from the Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies (IDMVS), University of Dhaka!

The institute has led the way in offering top-notch education and research in diverse areas of disaster management since its founding year 2012; from the Department of Sociology of Dhaka University and the Government of Bangladesh as a direct response of the emerging necessity to comprehend the complex interactions between humanitarian crisis and disasters. The need to establish a discipline that addresses the holistic approaches of disaster management was evident at the time, given the abundance of hazards, disasters, and issues pertaining to the comprehensive aftermaths of global warming, unfavorable environmental crisis and climatic variability. The Center for Disaster and Vulnerability Studies (CDVS) was established on September 2, 2009 at the University of Dhaka, with the goal of disseminating knowledge, skills, and academic training. It was funded by the Comprehensive Disaster Management Program (CDMP) of the Government of Bangladesh (GoB). Subsequently, on December 15, 2011; the University of Dhaka Syndicate approved the establishment of the Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerabilities Studies (IDMVS) as one of the pioneering knowledge hubs of disaster management and vulnerability studies. Two visionary and veteran academic co-founded the institute together. Professor Dr. Khondoker Mokaddem Hossain laid the foundation of the Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies (IDMVS), with Professor Dr. Mahbuba Nasreen serving as the Director and Co-founder.

The mission of Dhaka University is to "be a leading institution for academic excellence and innovations on disaster management in Asia," and IDMVS works in line with this goal. "To build capacity through training and research for disaster management responsive to national and global needs" is the stated aim of IDMVS. We at the Institute provide a variety of degree programs to meet the needs of students with different educational goals. Bachelor of Disaster Management (BDM) for four years, Master of Disaster Management (MDM) for one year, Professional Masters for one and a half years, Master of Philosophy (M.Phil), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees are among these programs.

Disaster risk reduction, disaster risk management, climate change adaptation, gender and intersectionality, public health in disasters, social-ecological systems (SESs) and disaster resilience (DR), eco-system based DRR, climate change and disaster governance, science-based climate policymaking and adaptation strategies, economics of climate crises, climate science, and anthropogenic climate crisis are just a few of the specializations in which we as an institute contribute. In order to give the students, the greatest education possible, our faculty is diverse and has a range of specializations. Research opportunities for our students include vulnerability and capacity assessment, disaster and climate change impacts, DRR and CCA, social systems, disaster risk governance, the relationship between disaster development, humanitarian crises management and many other relevant genres of this particular multidisciplinary field.

Moreover, the institute facilitates multidisciplinary approaches for establishing resilient and sustainable workforces and encourages collaboration among academicians, practitioners, and national/international organizations with the goal of developing skilled human resources through internship programs. The institute has been actively attempting to strengthen pertinent networking among many stakeholders through workshops, seminars, symposiums, public talks, and awareness initiatives. The operations of our institute revolve around collaboration and research connections. Funded by international institutions, development agencies, and government ministries, we actively participate in national knowledge-driven programs. Partnerships with the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR), the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), the Bangladesh Red Crescent Societies (BDRCS), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), Primark, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), and Bangladesh Open University (BOU) are just a few of the noteworthy partnerships which are currently in place. Additionally, we foster collaborations with prestigious international universities, such as University College London, University of Oxford.

Since IDMVS collaborates closely with government organizations, it also has strong relationships with other academic universities, donor organizations, and other organizations in and outside of Bangladesh; IDMVS currently possesses a contemporary GIS lab, an extensive library, National Disaster and Biodiversity Data Bank, Disaster Management Studio run by executive members who are the regular students of the institute. Extracurricular activities go beyond the classroom and are crucial to our student’s overall growth. To assist students in following their intended career routes, the studio offers skill development workshops, discussions about climate change and disasters, and research methodology.

We cordially encourage you to peruse our website and learn about the various options that the Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies (IDMVS) offers. Let's set out on a journey together to create a future that is safer, intersectional and more resilient!
