Welcome to the Department of Linguistics!
This is an incredibly exciting time to lead the Department of Linguistics at the University of Dhaka. Our department has a rich history and a strong tradition of excellence in the study of language, culture, and communication, making significant strides in advancing linguistic research and education. As Chair of the Department of Linguistics, my focus will be on fostering academic and research excellence within our field. We are committed to supporting, stimulating, and promoting innovative research that not only contributes to the academic community but also addresses the linguistic and cultural needs of our society. Our goal is to cultivate an environment where faculty and students can collaborate effectively, pushing the boundaries of linguistic knowledge and application.
Established in 1992, the Department of Linguistics at the University of Dhaka has dedicated itself to achieving the highest standards of academic excellence over the past three decades. Our program encompasses a comprehensive array of courses, ranging from traditional subjects such as phonetics, morphology, syntax, and semantics, to contemporary disciplines including sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, cognitive linguistics, and computational linguistics. The curriculum is methodically designed to equip students with the essential skills required to excel in both academic and professional arenas, thereby preparing them to address the multifaceted challenges of the twenty-first century.
In recent years, we have made remarkable progress in strengthening the research landscape at the University of Dhaka. By facilitating interdisciplinary projects, we have connected linguistic research with fields such as anthropology, cognitive science, and information technology. These efforts have significantly enhanced our understanding of language and its role in human interaction, bolstering the university's reputation as a leader in linguistic research.
Moving forward, we aim to continue stimulating collaboration and innovation within linguistics. We are dedicated to ensuring that Bangladesh's world-class fundamental and applied linguistic research continues to increase. On behalf of the faculty, I look forward to working with our national and international partners to accelerate the development of linguistic studies in Bangladesh.
