Naadir Junaid earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mass Communication and Journalism from the University of Dhaka. He secured first position in first class in both BA and MA final examinations. Due to his outstanding academic achievements, he was awarded three gold medals from the University of Dhaka. He also received other awards from the University of Dhaka because of his academic success.
In 2000, he joined University of Dhaka as a Lecturer. He was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship in 2003 to do a master’s in Film Studies at King's College, University of London. In 2004, he earned the master’s degree. In 2008, he was awarded Australian Government’s Endeavour Scholarship to study for a doctorate degree at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. He earned the PhD degree in 2013. The title of his PhD thesis is: “Bengali Political Cinema: Protest and Social Transformation.”
In 2015, Dr. Junaid was awarded an Australian Alumni Excellence Award. In 2016, he was appointed as an “Australia Awards Ambassador” by Australian Government for one year.
Dr. Junaid has a strong interest in examining the relationship between cinema, society, culture, and politics and in exploring Western and non-Western films that come to grips with burning social and political issues. Dr. Junaid has authored several books, journal articles, and book chapters that examine political and unconventional films produced in different countries. He also writes articles regularly about contemporary social and political realities as well as historical events in national dailies.
