Dr. Ahmedul Kabir
Professor
Dr. Ahmedul Kabir was appointed as a Lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, University of Dhaka in 2009. Prior to that, he was the guest teacher of the department from 2007 to 2009. He received his BA and MA degree with 1st class and 2nd position from the department of theatre and music. He earned his Ph.D. in Theatre Direction from University of Dhaka in 2017. He also served as the chairman of the department from 2016 to 2020.His researched works, more than 16 research articles, have been published in various research journals of Bangladesh such as Bangladesh Asiatic Society, Shilpakala Academy's Half Yearly Bangla Patrika, Gobindra Dev Darshan Research Centre of Dhaka University, Darshan and Pragati of Dhaka University, Dhaka University Sahitya Patrika, Arts Faculty Journal of Dhaka University. In addition, his book Abhinayer Prothom Path, co-authored with Mr. Rahmat Ali on the subject of acting, has been acclaimed in the theatre community.
He has conducted workshops on theatre, folk-theatre, improvisation and applied theatre organized by various educational institutions, international organizations and many important theatre troupes in Bangladesh. Important institutions among them are- Plan International Bangladesh, Caritash Dhaka, Theatre Lab Dhaka, North South University Dhaka, Opera Natyadal, Subchan Natyasangsad, Natyachakra, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. He also participated in a seminar on TheLady from the Sea: Text to performance in collaboration with the Centre for Asia Theatre (CAT) and the Royal Norwegian Embassy, a seminar onTfD and Bangladesh organized by organized by the British Council, and a seminar on Theatre for Development: Practice and Reality organized by the Department of Theatre and Music at University of Dhaka. He participated in a special workshop on ‘Theatre for Development’, organized jointly by University of Dhaka and the British Council which was conducted by Professor Syed Jamil Ahmed and King Alfred College Winchester (UK), and a photography workshop organized by the British Council of Bangladesh. Besides, he took part in the exhibition of still picture titled Faith and Identity which was organized by Drik Gallery Dhaka and Chittagong.
Apart from fulfilling his academic responsibilities, Dr. Ahmedul Kabir has played an important role in the field of theatre education at the University of Dhaka as well as in the professional theatre practice and theatre community of Bangladesh, by participating in various important theatre productions through direction and planning activities. Notable plays he has directed and planned include: Raspuran, Bohni Bisarjan Bo-Dwip, Prothom Prartha, Bisarjan, Trishnay, A Mid Summer Night’s Dream, The Wild Duck, The Weavers, End Game,Koyedi Hayat, Megh, Phans, Kabar, The Government Inspector etc. All these theatre productions have been widely appreciated by the theatre audience of Bangladesh.
Multiple productions of this talented theatre director have been invited to various national and international theatre festivals. For example, ‘The Wild Duck’ at the '3rd Purvota Natya Samarah (2) Natyotsab' organized by the National School of Drama (NSD), Raspuran at Bangladesh IDLC theatre festival -2018, Bohni Bisarjan Bo-Dwip at Syed Shamsul Haque Theatre Festival -2017.
Apart from directing plays, he played an important role through acting in Lal Kamal Neel Kamal, TheFars of the Devil's Bridge, Grave, and Macbeth etc.
This theatre academician has been playing an important role in the development of theatre at the national level through his research on theatre, diversified theatre productions, direction and planning.
