Abul Basher Md. Ziaul Haque Bhuyan (Titas Zia) Actor, Director
Mr. Abul Basher Md. Ziaul Haque Bhuyan was appointed as Lecturer in the Department of Theater and Performance Studies, Dhaka University in 2008. Prior to that, he was the guest teacher of the department from 2007 to 2008. He received his BA and MA degree with 1st class and 1st position from the Department of Theatre and Music. He has received his Bangabandhu Overseas Scholarship from Dhaka University and is currently studying for PhD at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts-GITIS in the Russian Federation.
His research articles have been published in important research journals of Bangladesh such as Dhaka University Journal and Faculty of Arts Magazine of Dhaka University. He also participated as the author of chapter on Mime-Acting of the book named Poribeshona Shilpakola (Performing Arts) edited by Dr. Israfeel Shaheen and Published by Bangladesh Asiatic Society. In 2020, he presented a seminar on The Notion of Performance and Elements of Performance in Indigenous Theatre of Bangladesh at Russian Institute of theatre Arts-GITIS. He also participated in various artistic, critical and explanatory writings. For example, the plays he wrote and designed are: Ultorath, ABirthday Party, Hamlet Machine, Shitar Banabas, Nakshatrader Anirdharita Sanglap and Ghanta, and he was an active member of playwrights-team of Behular Bhasan in 2006.
He teaches the courses like; Introduction to Theatre, Indian Classical Drama, Improvisation, Theory of Play Direction, Acting Practicum-Realism, Symbolism, Practical Direction of Theatre, Euro-American Theatre. Apart from teaching at the department, he has given lectures and conducted workshops at important institutions of Bangladesh such as Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, National Institute of Mass Communication (NIMC) and various theatre troupes. He also stayed with Indian, Japanese and Korean playwrights and artists at the month-long Theatre Residency, held at Theatre Mindule in Seoul, South Korea in 2014, in this festival, participated in workshop, wrote play, and performed as an actor in the theatre production of this festival.
He played an important role in the sector of theatre and film. In addition to directing and acting on stage at the academic level, he has been acclaimed as an actor by participating in various national and international full-length films, short films, advertisements and television dramas. He received the 17th National Film Award for Best Actor, for his lead role in the full-length film Mrittika Maya, from the Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina.
Notable films he has acted in are: 'Mrittika Maya' financed by Bangladesh Government, 'Nona Jaler Kavya'(The Salt In Our Waters) produced by Bangladesh and France, 'Sorry for the Inconvenience' and 'Fanki' produced by Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kolkata. He has also starred in the BBC World Service-funded drama series ‘Ujan Ganger Naiya’ and ‘Gharchara’. He is a well-known face in the advertising industry of Bangladesh.
He has been praised by participating as an actor in various stage plays at national and international level. Notable plays he acted in are- Rizwan, Macbeth, Life Story of Galileo, Tritiya Purush, The Fars of the Devil’s Bridge, Quaid-e-Hayat, Irsha and Kabar.He played Romeo in Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, produced by the Moscow Youth Experimental Theatre in Russia in 2019, and the conceptualized performances A Birthday Party and Ontology of an urban cosmos at the Mindulepum Theatre Festival in South Korea in 2014.
Notable drama productions he has directed are 'Ultorath', 'Death of a Salesman', 'Play with a Tiger', 'A Birthday Party', 'The Home Coming', 'The Seagull', 'Tritiya Purush', 'Nurul Deener Sarajiban',' And Then There Were None ',' Night ',' Nakshatrader Anirdharita Sanglap’ and 'Ghanta'. He designed himself that he directed. All these plays directed by him have been widely appreciated by the theatre audience of Bangladesh.
He has been awarded and been nominated for award in several times by important national and various institutions for his special contribution in the field of education and acting at the national level and was nominated for the award. Notable awards and honors he has received are: National Film Award 2013 as the Best Actor, Bangladesh Cine Journalists Association (BCJA) Award 2013 as the Best Actor, Meril Prothom Alo Award 2013 as the Best Actor (Nominated), Sergent Ahad Parvez Memorial Scholarship 2018 by Natyachakra, Best Theatre Practioner 2018 by Dhaka University Cultural Society, Bangabandhu University Overseas Scholarship – 2018 (Currently doing his PhD from the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts-GITIS in Moscow, Russia).
He, a talented theatre academician and actor of Bangladesh, has been making continuous contribution in Bangladesh and internationally through his tireless efforts and relentless work and participation.
