On the afternoon of July 11, 2025, a high-level delegation led by Md. Shafiqur Rahman, Amir of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, visited the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS). Wu Chunsi, Senior Research Fellow, director of the Center for American Studies at SIIS, received the delegation on behalf of the institute’s leadership. The two sides held in-depth discussions on a range of issues, including China-Bangladesh relations, the regional situation in South Asia, and governance of regional affairs.
Wu Chunsi provided an overview of SIIS's institutional development and organizational structure. She noted that SIIS hopes to enhance exchanges with Bangladeshi political parties, think tanks, as well as universities and colleges to strengthen mutual understanding and contribute to greater bilateral trust and common development. Liu Zongyi, Director of the Center for South Asian Studies at SIIS and Chinese director of Centre for China Studies (Bangladesh), focused on the Centre for China Studies jointly established by SIIS and the University of Dhaka, detailing its achievements since its inception. He noted that China consistently prioritizes the "Bangladeshi people first" principle in developing bilateral relations and that China is committed to strengthening cooperation with Bangladesh across multiple domains including development, environmental protection, disaster relief, climate change, and agriculture.
Shafiqul elaborated on the historical evolution of the Jamaat-e-Islami, emphasizing that the party is committed to harmony and peace and firmly adheres to the one-China principle while consistently maintaining a friendly policy toward China. He expressed the hope to enhance exchanges between the Jamaat-e-Islami party and its affiliated organizations with SIIS, aiming to deepen mutual understanding and friendship and contribute to the friendly relations between China and Bangladesh.
The delegation also included Md. Saiful Alam Khan, member of the Jamaat-e-Islami Central Executive Committee, Abul Hasanat Muhammad Abdul Halim, Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami, Mohammad Shahjahan, Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami, Central Executive Committee members Md. Mobarak Hossain and Mohammad Shahidul Islam, as well as Anwarul Azim, Secretary of the Industry and Commerce Welfare Fundation, and Muhammad Nazrul Islam, Secretary to the Amir.
Experts from SIIS, including Ye Yu, Deputy Director of the Institute for World Economy Studies, and Dr. Li Hongmei, Dr. Tan Chenyi, Dr. Wu Mengke, research fellows from the Center for South Asian Studies, attended the seminar along with Zheng Zihan, Attaché of the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh.
