The Department of Theoretical Physics, University of Dhaka was established in 1975 as a postgraduate department offering MSc, MPhil and PhD degrees. Although very much successful, the Department had to stop its activities after only three years due to necessary faculty and infrastructural facilities. This was a very unfortunate event. Professor A.M. Harun-or-Rashid was the founder Chairman of the department. Realizing the importance of the study of fundamental science in the 21st century, the University authorities decided to revive the Department. Dr.Golam Mohammad Bhuiyan, Dr.Arshad Momen and Dr.Md.Kamrul Hassan took the primary initiative for its revival and they had the major role in the re-establishment of this department . At last with the earnest help of the Department of Physics and it’s then Chairman Professor R.I.M Aminur Rashid and the University authority, it was re-established in the year 2007.The university authority offered the chairmanship to Dr. Golam Mohammad Bhuiyan. Finally the MS program started in the year 2008 with 10 students and 3 faculty members (session 2006-2007). More than 80% of the students who got MSc. Degree from the Department of Theoretical Physics were admitted with scholarships  in postgraduate and PhD programs in world class institutions and universities. It is our hope that they will be successful in their goal of pursuing higher studies in Theoretical Physics,  contribute to fundamental science and to frontier level research in fundamental science worldwide as well as our country.
