Project Background:

The main goal of the project is to recycle tannery solid wastes (TSWs) by innovating circular economy (CE) based green technology that helps to reduce CO2 emissions. The research was selected due to the abundance of TSWs and their inappropriate dumping results in considerable emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG), which may be reduced with the implementation of environmentally friendly management technologies.

The objectives of the project are manifold. These are as follows:

To promote climate change adaptation planning and implementation of carbon reduction technology for the leather sector in order to meet the challenges of implementing Industry 4.0 iR. This technology helps in the environmentally sustainable management of the significant amount of tannery solid waste generated during its processing phases.
To prevent methane formation as a result of unplanned landfilling of TSWs by innovating environmentally friendly management system because methane is 23 times stronger than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere.
To conduct a comprehensive feasibility survey in tanneries of BSCIC Tannery Industrial Estate, Dhaka, Savar, Hemayetpur and the tanneries of Jashore and Chattagram in order to get a reliable data bases of solid wastes generation in these areas.
To produce proteolytic enzyme from TSWs dumping soil bacteria and assessment of its activity for hydrolysis of TSWs.
To facilitate the process of achieving Leather Working Group (LWG) certification required to enter in the EU and USA markets, by developing ecofriendly management techniques. This will help to get desired LWG score for waste management and will allow to enter EU and USA market to achieve of Govt. target of $10 billion USD export from leather sector by 2030.
To develop a pilot plant at the University of Dhaka's Institute of Leather Engineering and Technology (ILET) for biodiesel production from TSWs, therefore establishing a value for these hazardous solid wastes.
To create awareness among the stakeholders about the effects of climate change caused due to unethical and improper TSWs disposal by circulating leaflets, booklets and posters.

University of Dhaka is funded by a grant from Bangladesh Climate Change Trust Fund (BCCTF) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. Under the contracts on grants for supporting leather solid waste management, University of Dhaka is assigned on behalf of Ministry of Education (Secondary and Higher Education Division) to conduct Research and Development. One (01) Individual Consultant for Materials and Waste Management (16 months) will be appointed for the Innovation of circular economy based eco-friendly leather solid waste processing technologies for carbon emissions reduction and climate change mitigation project on a competitive basis. The location of the assignments, qualifications, required experiences and responsibilities are as follows:

Individual Consultant for Materials and Waste Management (National)

Bachelor and Master’s Degree in Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering/Technology with PhD in relevant field from any recognized University of Home and Abroad

Strong Communication, Interpersonal and computer skills especially excellent typing speed in English;

10 years teaching and research experiences in university level with adequate experiences in leather processing
Consult should have publications in green leather processing in referred journals
Consultant should be able to work on enzymatic leather processing
Consultant should have sound knowledge materials processing and waste management particularly in waste to energy and also in Circular economy concept

Conduct workshops, Facilitator guide & Teaching to aid in English (if required).
Take necessary step to conduct experiments and guide research fellows (if required).
Take necessary step to establish pilot plant for TSWs processing to biodiesel (if any).
Establish detailed characterization protocol for biodiesel (if required).

The consultant's honorarium is negotiable and will be determined in accordance with the project budget. Only short-listed candidates will be notified.
