The Department of Meteorology at the University of Dhaka organised a seminar titled “Ensuring Early Warning for All: Reflection of July Spirit” (সবার জন্য আগাম সতর্কতা নিশ্চিতকরণ: জুলাই চেতনার প্রতিফলন) on 3rd August, 2025 to mark the first anniversary of the historic July Movement. The event commemorated the unwavering courage of students who stood for justice, equality, and democratic rights, even in the face of repression.
The seminar brought together faculty members, students, and office members in a shared space of remembrance and academic reflection held at the departmental research room. The program was chaired by Dr. Fatima Akter, Chairperson and Associate Professor of the Department of Meteorology. Professor Dr. Kazi Matin Uddin Ahmed, Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences, graced the event as the Chief Guest. The event commenced with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by the National Anthem performed by the students.
Dr. Fatima Akter emphasized the role of educational institutions in upholding democratic values and underscored the relevance of inclusive early warning systems in today’s climate-vulnerable world. Also delivering the keynote address, Dr. Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik, Meteorologist at the Storm Warning Centre, Bangladesh Meteorological Department, reflected on the critical connection between early warning dissemination, social equity, and resilience building; urging that early warnings must reach all, especially the most vulnerable.
Two students from the department, Farhana Zareen Meheru and Abu Baser Mojumder shared powerful reflections on their lived experiences during the July Movement. A documentary directed by the students offered a visual narrative of resistance and resilience, followed by a musical performance by students capturing the enduring spirit of unity and hope.
The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Rabiul Awal, faculty member of the department, who acknowledged the presence and contribution of all guests, speakers and student organizers.
This seminar served not only as a tribute to the student martyrs but also as a call to action; for building a just, resilient, and informed society where early warning systems are accessible to every individual, from urban centers to remote communities.
