An interactive meeting with representative from World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Mr. Ramesh Tripathi, Project Manager, and WMO-Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, took place at the Department of Meteorology, University of Dhaka. The session was held in the presence of Dr. Fatima Akter, Chairperson of the Department of Meteorology and Steering Member of the WWRP PEOPLE Project, along with Dr. Shameem Hassan Bhuiyan, Meteorologist from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD). Faculty members from the department also joined the meeting, including Dr. Md. Rabiul Awal, Aishia Fyruz Aishi, Shabista Yildiz, and Pronab Das, among the respected faculty members of the department. ICO Intern Sadia Afrin Sayfa Negaban and technical support staff member Shahinur Alom were also part of the meeting.
The discussion focused on work under the International Coordination Office (ICO), exploring future opportunities for collaboration, strengthening joint initiatives, and enhancing cooperation between the organizations. WMO’s research interests closely align with academic research priorities, especially in areas such as urban flooding, improving nowcasting capabilities, and initiatives like the Global Hydrological Status and Outlook System (HydroSOS), all of which hold significant potential for impactful research and operational advancements. The meeting highlighted how shared expertise can contribute to more effective meteorological services and research outcomes. The session ended with a promising outlook for future collaboration and a shared commitment to advancing meteorological research and operational excellence.
