Welcome to the 100-years-old Department of Chemistry at the University of Dhaka. The faculty of science of this University started its journey in 1921 on the Curzon Hall campus with three Departments, among which the Department of Chemistry is one of them. Currently, this Department is situated in two locations, “Curzon Hall” and “Mukarram Hossain Khundkar Biggyan Bhaban”.
Professor Dr. Md. Qamrul Ehsan is the present chairman of the Department of Chemistry and has been holding the chair since 1st February 2023.
The faculty members of this Department are highly professional and have excellent academic credentials. They have been conferred with many prestigious awards at national and international levels. At present, there are 21 Professors, 07 Associate Professors, 04 Assistant Professors, and 04 Lecturers in the Department. 29 of these teachers received Ph.D/D.Sc. degree from different renowned universities in the world. Six other teachers are on study leave for higher studies abroad.
The Department runs courses for the B.S. Honours, M.S., M. Phil, and Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry. Besides, it gives minor courses in Chemistry from various Departments under the Faculties of Sciences and Biological Sciences. About 700 students (including students in minor courses) are studying in the Department.
Our department has active research groups for carrying out interdisciplinary research with collaboration all over the world. We have modern facilities to support our academic programs and research. Our research infrastructure has been modernized by funding allocated from different government and non-government agencies at home and abroad. 88 M.S., 02 M. Phil, and 10 Ph.D. students are doing research in the Department. Since 1981, the Department has been regularly arranging the “Khundkar Memorial Lecture” instituted by the Syndicate of the University of Dhaka, to honour the memory of the Late Professor M H Khundkar.
