To create efficient manpower in information technology, the Institute of Information Technology was established in June 2001 by converting the erstwhile Computer Centre (estd. In 1985). The Institute offers Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering (BSSE-students admitted under KA-Unit Honours admission test) and Master of Science in Software Engineering (MSSE) degrees. Besides the institute offers Master in Information Technology (MIT) and Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology (PGDIT). IIT also offers MPhil and PhD courses. The main theme of BSSE and MSSE is Software Engineering. Considering the market demand of IIT, the Institute has taken the credit of starting the software engineering education in this country. The students of IIT acquire the various issues of information technology and gain practical knowledge. Besides the students, faculties, researchers of IIT are involved in uptodate research and provide their valuable opinion in the policy and decision making issues of the state. The four storey red ceramic IIT Building is in the north western corner of Dhaka University Science Library and Khondker Mukarram Hossain Science Building area. The Institute has seven computer laboratories. The fourth year Honours Students are sent to different organization for Industry Attachment to complete their Internship.
