Characterizing Atmospheric Composition | Characterizing atmospheric particulate matter (PM) and associated contaminants (e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals). This approach helps assess the magnitude of air pollution, source contributions, and potential health and ecological risks, while also informing policy measures such as the National Air Quality Management Plan. |
Biomonitoring | Biomonitoring is a widely used technique for cost-effective and efficient evaluation of urban air quality. Trees are especially useful as biological indicators to assess air pollution and the effects of urbanization. When exposed to air pollutants, the physiology, morphology, and biochemistry of a plant may be affected, which will result in alterations to that plant’s function and growth. |
Microplastics in the Environment | Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental and social issues of the 21st century. While microplastic pollution is an active research hotspot, the topic of microplastics in the atmospheric compartment is still an uncharted territory. With the growing concerns about the contribution of particulate matter on the world’s morbidity and mortality, it is a worthy undertaking to increase the monitoring efforts in order to assess the status of microplastics in the atmosphere. |
Air Pollution Mitigation Using Passive Techniques | Air pollution is the leading environmental threat to health worldwide, causing significant mortality and disproportionately impacting vulnerable populations throughout the life course. Green spaces possess the capacity to significantly improve air quality, an ecosystem service that has a direct impact on human health and can even be quantified monetarily. As a nature-based solution, roadside trees can potentially improve air quality by increasing dispersion and facilitating the deposition of pollutants. |
Urban trees make a substantial contribution to achieving Goal 3 of sustainable development, which aims to promote good health and well-being, as well as Goal 11, which focuses on establishing sustainable cities and communities. |
