Welcome to the Department of History. As one among the first 12 departments that the University of Dhaka began its journey with a century ago, on July 1, 1921, the history of the growth of this department is an integral part of the growth and development of the university itself. Initially opening with 5 teachers and 7 students, the department today has around 31 faculty members and a student body of almost 600 each academic year in the BA (Hons.) and Masters programs combined. Our vision and mission is to provide a well-rounded teaching-learning-working experience by constantly upgrading its infrastructural facilities as well as paying attention to intra-curricular and extra-curricular development. We offer courses on ancient, medieval and modern eras in Asia, Europe, America and Africa, with special emphasis on Bengal and South Asia. An ever-expanding computer laboratory, a well-equipped seminar library and modern classrooms fitted with multi-media technology and air-conditioning assists students in their education and research, while the Debating Club, Book Reading and Story Telling Club, English Language Club, Film Club, Sports Club and annual cultural programs heavily contribute to building self-confidence and leadership qualities among students. Gold Medals and Academic Rolls of Honor are awarded to students for outstanding result in BA (Hons.) and MA examinations. There are as many as 15 endowment and scholarship funds set up to provide financial assistance to the students. Mention may be made of the Mirza Banu and Sirajul Islam Endowment Fund as the largest endowment fund operated by any department of the university. A strong alumni network consisting of three former Presidents of the country, former Chief Justices, Members of Parliament, academicians, bureaucrats, cultural personalities, business persons and other professionals provides constant encouragement towards self-improvement. May your journey with this department be joyful and productive.
