Department of Philosophy has a long history and tradition. It is as old as the University of Dhaka. The Department was established in 1921, when the University of Dhaka started its journey with three faculties (Arts, Science and Law) and twelve departments. Department of Philosophy is one of the twelve departments with which the academic programme began. From the very beginning the main objective of the Department is to provide quality education. At present the Department has around 900 students of which 48% are female. There are 35 staffs among which 28 are academic staffs. A good number of teachers completed Doctorate and Post-Doctorate degree from home and abroad (North America, Australia and India). Since its inception in 1921, the Department has been contributing to different areas of philosophy and humanities. It has reputation for very good teaching and research and some of the faculty members have national and international reputation for their academic activities. In recent years, the Department has expanded its academic programmes and enhance teaching and research activities under semester system. The Department has more than 3000 Alumni and many of them are working in different government and non-government organizations in home and abroad. Some Alumni provide financial assistance for the infrastructural development of the Department as well as scholarships for poor and meritorious students.
