Department of Political Science
The Department of Political Science is one of the oldest departments in the University of Dhaka. In 1921 the University of Dhaka initially commenced its academic endeavor with twelve departments and the Department of Economics and Politics was one of them. However, the Department of Political Science started its own independent journey in 1938.
The Department of Political Science offers Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSS) Honors, Master of Social Sciences (MSS), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs. In each academic year more than two hundred students are enrolled in its BSS Honors program while a fairly good number of students apply for M Phil and PhD programs with an interest in various fields of Political Science. Moreover, it runs Master in Governance Studies (MGS) program for graduates and professionals. Besides, the Department publishes a journal, organizes lectures, discussions and special seminars on domestic, regional and international issues of importance. Since its inception the Department has been maintaining a congenial academic atmosphere for both students and faculties in enhancing their knowledge and analytical skills and it is deeply committed to do so in upcoming years.
The Department of Political Science has enormous contribution in making the history of Bangladesh. Its students and faculties wholeheartedly participated in critical events of the Bangladesh movement: from Language Movement to Six Points Movement to Mass Uprising to Liberation War. Even in independent Bangladesh it continued to do the same. Besides, the Department has always pursued a constructive path of advising the political parties in nation building and state building initiatives through meticulous research, proper advocacy and regular media presence. In addition, it has record of excellence in extracurricular pursuits such as winning sports, debating, participating cultural programs and voluntary works, publishing little magazines and so on.
