Bioremediation of the effects of heavy metals | Investigating the effects of arsenic/other heavy metals in animal model (mice) followed by examining whether various plant extracts supplied in mice food could scavenge the heavy metal-mediated adverse effects developed in mice. The outcome of this mice model can also be applied to human. The ultimate aim of this research is to find out an effective way of remedy for heavy metal-mediated diseases in human. In addition, we are isolating various microorganisms tolerant to arsenic and other metals with the aim of using those microorganisms for bioremediation.
Research on environmental pollutants | Arsenic is known as a devastating pollutant in Bangladesh after it caused contamination of ground water affecting millions of people. At the same time various industrial waste drainage are polluting the surface water of rivers, canals and ponds. These industrial wastes mainly contain a huge amount of chromium, iron, manganese, copper, lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury and other toxic elements. All of these metals and chemicals, if exceed standard limits, are very toxic for human and animal health. We are currently analyzing water samples collected from different rivers, lakes, canals to see the status of the pollutants and working on the remediation process of the toxic effects of the pollutants.
Intracellular signal transduction | Various compounds including chemicals, drugs, environmental pollutants, mitogens, allergens etc can act as signaling molecules affecting numerous intracellular signal transduction pathways causing alterations in cellular functions. These alterations ultimately affect cell growth and diffentiation or promote cell death. We have so far been shown the mechanism of action of various toxic chemicals (mercury, arsenic, barium), mitogens, herbal extracts etc on culture cells affecting various signal transduction pathways. Studies of the chemical-mediated intracellular signal transduction to elucidate the molecular mechanism would make us understand the pathogenesis of affected cells/tissue types. This would ultimately lead us to opt for a better therapeutic treatment. |
