On November 3, 2024, the Department of Management Information Systems hosted SheSTEM, a pivotal event dedicated to empowering female students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The event aimed to inspire young women, bridge the industry-academia gap, provide networking opportunities, and showcase career pathways and effective guidance at Professor Dr. Abdullah Farouk Multipurpose Hall at the Faculty of Business Studies, University of Dhaka.
This impactful initiative was a collaborative effort supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It was spearheaded by a consortium that included a2i (Aspire to Innovate), the ICT Division, 10 Minute School (10MS), Devlearn, LightCastle Partners, and Policy Exchange Bangladesh, in association with the Department of Management Information Systems (MIS), University of Dhaka. Together, these organizations designed the program to address the pressing gender gap in STEM education and careers in Bangladesh.
SheSTEM responded to the stark gender disparity in STEM fields within the country, where women hold only 14% of STEM roles. This imbalance, rooted in deep-seated gender biases in education and employment, limits Bangladesh's potential for inclusive economic growth. Studies show that nearly half of the girls interested in STEM lack exposure to female role models, and by age 16, only 25% of girls picture scientists as women.
SheSTEM showcased solutions to improve career guidance for young women in STEM through engaging discussions, panels, and practical sessions. The event fostered collaboration among stakeholders to devise and implement inclusive strategies, paving the way for a more gender-balanced and supportive environment in STEM fields and working towards a future where women in STEM can thrive on an equal footing.
