Biography of Dr. Serajul Haque
Emeritus Professor Sirajul Haque, a renowned professor and Islamic thinker of Dhaka University, was born on 1 April 1905 in the village of Belakot in Ramganj upazila of Laxmipur district.
He graduated from Islamic Intermediate College in 1923 with first class honors, first class BA Honors in Islamic Studies at Dhaka University in 1928, second class MA in 1928, second class MA in Persian in 1930. In 1938, he received his PhD on Ibn Taymiyyah and His Project of Reform under the supervision of Professor Hamilton Gibb, a renowned Orientalist from the University of London.
Dr. Sirajul Haque joined Dhaka University in 1926 as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Lecturer in 1936, Reader in 1943 and Professor in 1951. He was promoted to the post till 1980. He was the Head of the Department from 1951 to 1960, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1964 to 1965 and 1968 to 1969, the Assistant Proctor for five years from 1940 to 1945, and the Librarian in 1944. In 1980, he became the first unpaid treasurer and acting vice chancellor of Jahangirnagar Muslim University. Professor Emeritus has been in office since his death in 1975. He was equally proficient in Arabic, Bengali, Urdu and English.
He was a member of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, Islamic Foundation Bangladesh Board of Governors and Government Zakat Board, Islamic Encyclopedia and Sirat Encyclopedia Editing Council, Government Titumir College and Tibbia Habibia College Governing Body. In addition, Maulana Mohammad Akram Khan Committee, Kudrat-i-Khuda Commission and Dr. MA Bari was a member of Madrasa Education Reform in five commissions including the committee.
He was awarded the Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 1989, the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh Fellowship in 1983, the highest civilian honor, the Independence Day Award in 198, the Islamic Foundation Medal in 1985, the Sukumar Sen Gold Medal in 1996 from the Asiatic Society of Calcutta and the Ekushey Padak in 1997. . In order to preserve his memory, Dhaka University, Department of Islamic Studies ‘Dr. Sirajul Haque has established the Islamic Research Center. He died on March 4, 2005 at the age of 100.
