Starting its journey on November 3, 2008 with the joining of its founding Chairman Professor Khondkar Siddique-e Rabbani, the Department of Biomedical Physics and Technology (BMPT) aims high, to make it one of the centerpieces in the area of Biomedical Physics, Engineering and Technology. This post graduate multidisciplinary department emphasizes research and development aimed at delivering the benefits of modern healthcare technologies to the deprived people globally, particularly in Bangladesh.
This department has already produced a few innovations that have made its name known in the International arena. BMPT emphasis research in the fields: (i) A novel Focused Impedance Method (FIM) for the diagnosis of disorders and diseases of lungs, stomach and certain cancers (ii) A new neuro physiological parameter named Distribution of F-latency (DFL), having potential in the detection and diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy (iii) Destruction of diarrhoeal germs in water at low cost (iv) Biomedical signal and image analysis for medical applications (v) Telemedicine.
Aiming for relevant and target oriented research, this department initially started with Ph.D. and M.Phil. programmes. Depending on the research programmes of the department, and the consent of individual supervisors, candidates from any field of science, engineering and Medicine may apply for the PhD and MPhil programmes following the rules and regulations of the university.
The Department of Biomedical Physics & Technology offers Master of Science programmes in two specialized branches: (i) Biomedical Engineering and (ii) Medical Physics; in order to create manpower for developing healthcare technology locally, and for creating manpower to understand, install and operate radiotherapy and other sophisticated equipment in hospitals, and to assist medical doctors in preparing treatment plans using these devices. Candidates having four years B.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in Biomedical Engineering, Medical Physics, Physics, Applied Physics & Electronics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and related subjects from any recognized university can apply for the MS programmes.
Achievements:
(1) ‘Dhaka University Telemedicine Programme (DUTP)’ organised by the department under the leadership of Professor K Siddique-e Rabbani, became the winning project with the heading ‘Telemedicine-Bangladesh’ at the 3rd Commonwealth Digital Health Awards-2018 held in Colombo, Srilanka.
(2) ‘Dhaka University Telemedicine Programme (DUTP)’ was the Champion at World Summit of Information Societies Forum Award (WSIS-2017) in Geneva (through a2i).
(3) DUTP became the winner in BRAC-Manthan award 2016 in Bangladesh and Finalist in the Manthan South Asia Award-2016 in India.
