Congratulations to Professor Anwarul Azim Akhand for BAS Fellowship
The Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology extends congratulations to Professor Dr. Md. Anwarul Azim Akhand on being appointed as a fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS). BAS, a national organization dedicated to representing and globally promoting the scientific community, focuses on advancing research in pure and applied sciences for national welfare. It also serves as an adhering body to international scientific unions, actively contributing to global scientific initiatives. The recognition of fellows by BAS is based on an individual's significant contributions to science. Dr. Akhand has so far published 94 articles in peer reviewed reputed international and national journals.
Dr. Md. Anwarul Azim Akhand, a professor at the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Dhaka, holds a distinguished academic background. He completed BSc. and MSc. Degrees with a "Dean’s Honour List Certificate" from the Department of Biochemistry, University of Dhaka. He earned his PhD from the Department of Immunology, Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine, Japan, and subsequently served as an Assistant Professor there until 2002. Later, he joined the newly established Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Dhaka, where he served as the department's Chairman for three years starting from 2005.
Dr. Akhand's research spans diverse disciplines such as immunology, cell signaling, environmental science, biotechnology, animal science, agricultural plant science, and developmental biology. His works include bioremediation of heavy metal toxicity, research on environmental pollutants, and intracellular signal transduction.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Professor Dr. Md. Anwarul Azim Akhand received the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS) Award for Junior Scientist in 2004 and later earned international acclaim with the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Young Scientist Award the following year. The Department expresses pride and joy in congratulating Professor Dr. Md. Anwarul Azim Akhand on the prestigious achievement as an Academy fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences in 2023.
