Professor Dr. Mofizuddin Ahmed was a renowned scientist and educationist. He was born in Tangail district in 1921. Dr. Ahmed obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Chemistry from the University of Dhaka. He completed his PhD degree at Pennsylvania State University.
Dr. Ahmed started his career as a senior lecturer at the Department of Chemistry in the University of Dhaka in 1948. Dr. Ahmed was appointed as the first vice-chancellor of Jahangirnagar University in 1970. In 1987, he headed the National Education Commission (popularly called Mofiz Commission named after him). He was the founding President of the Bangladesh Chemical Society, established in 1972. He was also appointed as the Chairman of the BCSIR. After the expiry of his term as the Chairman in the BCSIR, Dr. Ahmed came back to the Department of Chemistry. He was appointed as an Emeritus Professor of the Department of Chemistry in Dhaka University in 1988 and continued in this position until his death in 1997. Dr. Ahmed was a renowned organic chemist. He was the recipient of Independence Day Award (1986) and Bangladesh Chemical Society Gold Medal (1988).
