Notable Alumni

Professor Dr. Fazlul Halim Chowdhury was born in Comilla district in 1930. He obtained both BSc Honours and MSc degrees from the Department of Chemistry, University of Dhaka.

He completed his PhD at Manchester University. He began his career as a Lecturer in Chemistry at Dhaka University in 1952 and was promoted as Assistant Professor in 1956. Then he joined Rajshahi University and became a reader in 1958 and a Professor in 1963. Professor Chowdhury was the founder Head and Professor of the Department of Applied Chemistry, Rajshahi University in 1967. Dr. Chowdhury returned to Dhaka University and became the vice-chancellor of the university in 1976. He died on April 9, 1996 in Dhaka.

Dr. Chowdhury was a Fellow of the Nuffield Foundation, Cambridge University; Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellow of the same university; and Senior Fellow of the Asia Foundation and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was a member of the University Grants Commission. He was elected president of the Bangladesh Association for the Advancement of Science in 1982 and the Bangladesh Chemical Society in 1984. Dr. Chowdhury was appointed as Chairman of the College Reorganization Committee in 1975 and was also a member of the advisory council for reorganization of the education system in 1983. He made pioneering contributions to the development of Physical Chemistry in Bangladesh.
