On behalf of the faculty, staff, alumni, and students, I warmly welcome you all to the Department of Psychology at the University of Dhaka. The Department belongs to the Faculty of Biological Sciences and it is currently located on the second floor of the Arts Faculty Building. It is one of the largest in terms of the student population (around 700) within the Faculty.
Psychology today is one of the most fascinating and thriving areas of study. It is concerned with the scientific study of human behavior. It engages our sense of self, our relationships with others, and our place in the world. We firmly believe in the principle that human behavior must be studied scientifically. Consequently, the research expertise of the faculty strongly influences their approach to teaching. Rather than focusing solely on the memorization of facts, we emphasize the application of the scientific method to think about mind, brain, and behavior. Learning directly from experts in the field provides a valuable connection to the material that goes beyond textbooks.
The Department of Psychology currently offers four-year BS (Honors), one-year MS in Psychology, and one and half year Professional MS in School Psychology, MS in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, two-year MPhil, and 3-year PhD programs. The training and teaching of psychology at the University of Dhaka are largely based on offering students a theory-driven psychological education with a strong emphasis on fundamental research, intensive training, practicum, and internship. This approach is however scaled-up at the Master’s level where there is a strong emphasis on both research and competency-based learning. Thus, at the end of the graduate training in psychology, the student is well trained in both research and practice.
A Psychology degree opens a wide range of career opportunities both within and outside the psychology field. One can become a qualified psychologist after graduate studies leading to careers in clinical psychology, educational psychology, counseling psychology, school psychology, industrial-organizational psychology, child and adolescent psychology, and other career paths. Although a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology does not qualify one to become a Psychologist, it provides a good ground for further professional training in Psychology and other non-Psychology careers.
The Department of Psychology is especially proud of its research teams, in which undergraduates, graduates, and faculty work together focused on addressed important challenges. Over the years it has grown to be one of the most successful Departments in the University of Dhaka in particular and in Bangladesh in general with a wide range of research interests and a commitment to excellent teaching at all levels. The teachers and students of this Department maintain a harmonious relationship. Faculty members transfer their ideas and knowledge through quality teaching and enrich themselves with advanced research and scholarly achievements. We are committed to making the University of Dhaka the place that fully engages both the personal and intellectual passions of our students.
