Department of Music
In 1993, a subsidiary course on Music was instituted directly under the supervision of Dean, Faculty of Arts, Dhaka University. Followed by a similar course on Theatre instituted back in 1989. Both of these separate units were brought under a single departmental administration on 1 August, 1994 and named Department of Theatre and Music. In 1995, the very department introduced two M.A programs on Music and the other on Theatre. M.A (Theatre & Music) program is a two year course open for students with Bachelor in Arts or B.Mus degree and offered specialization on four disciplines:
I. Folk Music (Loko Sangeet),
II. Classical Music (Raga Sangeet),
III. Tagore Music (Rabindra Sangeet) and
IV. Nazrul Music (Nazrul Sangeet).
In 1998, Department of Music introduced 5 years Honors and Masters course on Classical, Folk, Tagore and Nazrul songs. M.phil and PhD degrees were also included and started from 2000. From 1 July, 2009, this Department started its new journey and named as Department of Music (Sangeet Bibhag). Currently there are 266 students are studying Honors and MA Degree on Tagore songs, Nazrul songs, Folk songs, Classical Music and Instrumental Music. From 2013 Department of Music started Instrumental Music (Tabla) as their new discipline. 35 researchers are doing their M.phil and PhD research on various streams of Music from this Department. Besides their regular academic activities Department of Music is very keen on their performance on various National and International occasion. Every year this department celebrates “Music Festival” to esteem and to spread out Bengali culture among the mass people.
