The Department of Nuclear Engineering, University of Dhaka has begun its academic activity in December 2012 under the leadership of Professor Dr. Khorshed Ahmad Kabir. At present, Dr. Animesh Pal is serving as the chairman (acting) of the Department. At the commencement, the Department admitted 25 students to the M.Sc. program in a competitive admission test. Currently, there are 131 B.Sc. students, 14 M.Sc. students, and 2 Ph.D. students. This Department is the first of its kind and is the pioneer in nuclear engineering education in Bangladesh.
Presently there are 15 faculty members in the department. Of them, 9 faculty members are pursuing higher studies abroad. In addition, there are 14 part-time faculty members from other departments of the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC), and Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL).
Laboratory Facilities:
The department is enriched with well-equipped laboratories which cover practical aspects of physics, electrical and electronic engineering, heat transfer & fluid mechanics, thermal-hydraulics and reactor safety, radiation science & health physics, nuclear instrumentation & measurements, and computer programming & simulation.
Research Areas:
Various research activities in nuclear engineering fields are conducted by the faculties and students in undergraduate and graduate studies. The major research area covers reactor statics, kinetics & dynamics, thermal hydraulics, computational fluid mechanics, nuclear safety and security, radiation protection, and shielding, radioactive waste management, nuclear analytical techniques, nuclear medicine, etc.
Career prospects:
Graduated students will get a chance to work at Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC), Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL), and Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA). In addition, prospective students have opportunities to work at departments of nuclear engineering, physics departments, and related R&D organizations at home and abroad.
