The Faculty of Engineering and Technology set out on its journey on June 26, 2008 in accordance with the first ordinance of the Dhaka University Order, 1973, and the approval of the senate on the recommendation of the academic council and syndicate. This faculty was established to produce skilled manpower in the engineering and technology fields who can effectively contribute to developing innovative, creative, and sustainable solutions for the industrial development of the country. At the time of commencement, the Faculty of Engineering and Technology had 3 departments under its supervision: Applied Physics, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Applied Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, and Computer Science & Engineering. Later, the Department of Nuclear Engineeringand the Department of Robotics & Mechatronics Engineering were also established and placed under the Faculty of Engineering and Technology.
The present-day Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering was founded as the Department of Applied Physics by Professor Shah Md. Fazlur Rahman in September 1965. The Department of Applied Physics was founded in response to a growing demand for advanced research in several areas of electronics. The department was renamed the Department of Applied Physics and Electronics in 1974 after the course content was revised. In October 2005, the curriculum was updated again, and the department was changed to the Department of Applied Physics, Electronics, & Communication Engineering. The new curriculum was modified to keep pace with the ever-growing need for expertise in the related field. In June 2008, this department came under the supervision of the Faculty of Engineering & Technology. The department evolved into the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in November 2014, and the curriculum was again revised. At that commencement, the department admitted students only in the M.Sc. program. Later on, the B.Sc. program was introduced in 1975. At present, the department offers B.Sc.& M.Sc. Engineering programs, M.Phil and Ph.D degrees.
The Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, formerly known as the Department of Applied Chemistry, was established on August 14, 1972, with Professor Dr. S.S.M.A. Khorasani as its first Chairman. At the beginning, the Department only offered M.Sc. (Preliminary) and M.Sc. (Final) program of one-year duration. In 1983, a regular three-year B.Sc. program was introduced, and the functioning of the M.Sc. (Preliminary) program was discontinued. At present, the department provides regular B.Sc. & M.Sc. Engineering programs, M.Phil and Ph.D degrees. It offers a curriculum in Applied Chemistry and Chemical Technology, as well as mandatory on-the-job training in Bangladesh's Chemical Process Industries. The Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is at the forefront of research in the areas: Industrial Products and by-products management. Industrial Process developments, Petroleum and Petrochemicals, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Analytical and Environmental Chemistry, Organic Synthetic Chemistry, Chemical Processing Technology, Energy Technology, Pharmacognosy and Natural Product Chemistry, Atmospheric Chemistry, Photochemistry, Carbohydrate Chemistry, Science of Materials, Nano-technology, Polymer processing Chemistry of supramolecular materials, HPLC (development of stationary phase and analytical system) Petroleum Mining and industrial Management, Petrochemicals.
The journey of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering started in September, 1992. It was a brainchild of Professor Dr. M. Lutfar Rahman, a visionary Professor of the Department of Applied Physics and Electronics, University of Dhaka, who felt the urge to come up with an institute to tackle the snowballing necessity for computer specialists. The department started with offering M.Sc. degree in Computer Science under the Faculty of Science. In 1994, three year B.Sc. Honors program was introduced which was upgraded to four year B.Sc. Honors program in 1997. It is the first department in the Faculty of Science to introduce the four-year B.Sc programin the University of Dhaka. In 2004, the name of the department was changed to Computer Science and Engineering, leading to its inclusion in the freshly formed Faculty of Engineering and Technology in 2008. At present, the department provides regular B.Sc. & M.Sc. engineering programs, M.Phil and Ph.D degrees. The faculty members of the department conduct research on diverse fields of interests and engage students to produce high quality research outcomes. The department focuses on complex problem solving capacity of the students, leading them to earn echelon positions in competitive programming contests, lucrative job positions in reputed multi-national companies, and various teaching and research positions in high-ranked academic institutions and research organizations at home and abroad. The department fosters inclusive leadership, imagination and innovation, educates with a student success at its heart, builds an effective and research-informed teaching staff, serves the public community with dedication and enthusiasm, and believes deeply in the centrality of integrity, diversity, and equity. Togetherness among the faculty members, staff and students in the department develops a community that promotes a culture of mutual care and institutional pride, that demonstrates balanced excellence across the disciplines, and that is dedicated to making life better for everyone who is touched by this great academic department.
The Department of Nuclear Engineering was established under this faculty through approval of the syndicate meeting dated 29th August 2010. This department initiated its academic activity in December 2012, with Professor Dr. Khorshed Ahmad Kabir as the head of the department. At the commencement, the Department of Nuclear Engineering offered M.Sc.engineering program only but recently it has introduced four-year B.Sc. engineering program. The Department is enriched with well-equipped laboratories which cover practical aspects of physics, electrical and electronic engineering, heat transfer & fluid mechanics, thermal-hydraulics and reactor safety, radiation science & health physics, nuclear instrumentation & measurements and computer programming & simulation. Currently, the department is researching the following areas: Fission Systems and Radiation Transport, Plasmas and Nuclear Fusion Technology, Reactor Materials and Radiation Effects, Nuclear Instrumentation & Control, Reliability, and Safety, Nuclear Energy Policy, Security and Safeguards, Radiological Science and Health Physics, Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Imaging. This Department is the first of its kind and is the pioneer in nuclear engineering education in Bangladesh.
To meet the demands of this era of modern technology, the Faculty of Engineering and Technology established the Department of Mechatronics Engineering on September 8, 2015, with Professor Dr. Hafiz Md. Hasan Babu as the founding head of the department. On June 21, 2016, the department was renamed the Department of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering under the initiative of Professor Dr. Hafiz Md. Hasan Babu. The department began its academic activity in the 2015-16 academic year with 16 students enrolled in the B.Sc. (Hons.) program at the university's KaziMotahar Hossain Bhaban. Now, the department provides regular B.Sc. engineering program. The department has formed its own laboratories to equip the students with all the modern technological facilities. Since its inception, the department has aimed to develop skilled manpower in this field and to establish world-class robotics and Mechatronics research facilities that will serve not only the department's students and faculty members, but also other universities and organizations interested in this field of engineering. Additionally, the department intends to participate in many national and international initiatives aimed at developing robotic and mechatronic-based products that will benefit society and the country. Research in this department is focused on the following areas: Medical Robotics, Children Robotics Education, IOT, Smart Intelligent Sensors, Control and Automation, Robotics Systems Design, Nano Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Robot Vision, Human Robot Interaction, Human Activity Recognition, Swarm Robotics, Mobile Crowd sourcing and Sensing, Biomedical Engineering and Telemedicine, Smart Farming and Precision Agriculture, Aerial and Satellite Imaging, Intelligent Surveillance, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning.
The Dean is responsible for leading, directing, conducting, overseeing, and coordinating the activities of the faculty. In accordance with the Dhaka University Ordinance 1973, faculty members follow an election procedure for nominating and electing a Dean of the Faculty of Engineering for two years. Professor Dr. Upama Kabir has been working as the Acting Dean of this Faculty from 3 September 2024.
