University of Dhaka was established on the 1st July of 1921. The University remains the best
educational institution for practicing knowledge and building a nation in Bangladesh. Although
the university began its journey with only 3 residential halls, there are 19 residential halls to date.
Among these, Kabi (Poet) Jasimuddin hall is eminent. Kabi Jasimuddin, the poet of our Bengal,
was very successful in creating a new genre of poetry in Bengali literature. In 1936, the University
of Dhaka honored him with an honorary doctorate Degree in Literature. In remembrance to the
contribution of the poet in Bengali literature, education, culture reflecting Bengali national life
and to create an eternal image to the next generation, the authority of the University of Dhaka
established a Hall of Residence after his name on the 1st January 1976, on the 73rd birthday of the
poet. On establishment, it was the 10th residential hall of the University. The construction work
of this hall was started in 1973 and ended in 1976. Kabi Jasimuddin Hall started its formal
activities through welcoming students from the 1st February of 1977.
Kabi Jasimuddin Hall is adjoined by two five-storied main buildings. The Hall has 120 residential
rooms available for the students in total. Professor K. A. A. Kamruddin was the first Provost of
this hall and Professor Dr. Muhammad Abdur Rashid is working as the current Provost. The Hall
administration is run by a group of five House Tutors and five Assistant House Tutors under the
leadership of the Provost. Kabi Jasimuddin Hall also employs 8 regular officers, 11 third-class
employees, 22 fourth-class employees, 6 part-time employees, and 1 master role employee.
Alongside, 9 security guards (doormen), 4 cleaners, 6 part-time cleaners, 2 electricians, 5
gardeners, 2 carpenters and plumbers are continuously serving to ensure smooth functioning of
the Hall administration.
Kabi Jasimuddin Hall cares the psychological wellbeing of the students and encourages them to
participate in different sports and recreational activities. The Hall equally promotes various
‘Student Associations’ (e.g. Badhon, Debating Club, etc.). Many students from this Hall are wellestablished both nationally as well as globally. In addition to fulfilling their professional
responsibilities, they are firmly committed to building the nation and its welfare. On the 10th
February 2018, the ex-students of this Hall formed an alliance named ‘Kabi Jasimuddin Hall
Alumni Association’. The first President and Secretary of this Association are respectively Mr. Md.
Mofazzal Hossain and Mr. Sheikh Sohel Rana Tipu.
