History of Ruqayyah Hall

Ruqayyah Hall is the largest female dormitory of the University. In 1938 the journey of Women’s Hostel started with 10-12 students named “Shamsul Huda House” or as “Chamery House”. In September 1956 it was recognized as “Women’s Hall”. In 1964 it was named after Begum Ruqayyah Sakhawat Hossain, the pioneer of woman’s liberation and women’s education in this sub-continent. Professor Akhter Imam was appointed as the first Provost of this Hall. In 1964 the first building of Ruqayyah Hall was constructed with the fund of the American Government. The construction of 7th March Bhavan was completed in 2016. Under the initiative of present Provost Professor Dr. Zeenat Huda all procedures regarding the inauguration of the building were completed in 2018. The building is named in memory of the historic speech of 7th March made by the greatest Bangali of all times and the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. It was inaugurated on 1st September 2018 by the Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The hall has Shapla, Chameli, Aparajita, and 7th March Bhavans. Currently, the hall has 520 rooms, and the residence students are around 2,700 and the attached students are around 7,000.
