The fifth Hall of the University of Dhaka, 'Iqbal Hall', was established in 1957 named after Pakistan's Poet Allama Iqbal. The agitated students ousted the Ayub regime in 1969 and changed the name of Iqbal Hall and renamed it as 'Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall' after the 17th accused of Agartala Conspiracy Case, Sergeant Zahurul Huq.
This Hall became a central place of directives for Liberation Struggle when the Non-Cooperation movement started in March 1971. The historic 'Joy Bangla Force' was formed in this Hall in order to achieve freedom of the Bengalese. The source of inspiration of the unflinching Bengalese, the flag of Bangladesh with a map was prepared in this Hall and hoisted for the first time on 2 March 1971 in front of Arts Building by the student leaders. Due to these reasons, the Pakistani occupying forces killed many students, staff and innocent people through their sudden attacks on the Black Night of the 25th March 1971. Following Independence in 1972 the authority of the DU officially changed the name of Iqbal Hall to ‘Zahurul Huq Hall.’ In 2013, the authority of the DU further changed the name of ‘Zahurul Huq Hall’ to ‘Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall’
