During their stay in Shanghai, the Bangladesh Young Leaders Delegation to China 2024 visited East China Normal University, Tongji University and other prestigious institutions. They held comprehensive discussions with faculty members and students on a range of topics, including education and economy, environmental protection, and sustainable development.
On the afternoon of June 5, 2024, Mr. Gu Hongliang, Vice President of East China Normal University, warmly welcomed the delegation and introduced the university's three missions (Education, Civilization, and Development), five action plans ("Education+", "Ecology+", "Health+", "AI+", "Internationalization+"), and three major development strategies (Interdisciplinary, Internationalization, and Informatization). When reflecting on his visit to the University of Dhaka and the University of Chittagong in March this year, he shared his experiences and insights. Mr. Gu also expressed his hope that the delegation members would seize this opportunity of visit to gain a deeper understanding of Chinese universities and higher education in China through exchanges.
Associate Prof. Qiu Weihua from the Department of Educational Management at the Faculty of Education, East China Normal University, delivered a thematic lecture titled "The Relationship between Education and Economic Development" to the delegation. Through case studies, he elucidated the strong correlation between achievements in mathematics and science and economic development. The delegation members were highly engaged, asking numerous questions, and contributing to a lively atmosphere. Finally, the delegation toured the university's history museum, where they learned about East China Normal University's historical evolution, cultural traditions, educational achievements, and social contributions.
On the morning of June 6, the delegation arrived at Tongji University. Prof. Zhou Minghao, Vice Director of the Liberal Arts Office and Executive Deputy Dean of the Institute of Precision Governance of Mega-Cities at Tongji University, gave a welcome speech before introducing the university. Prof. Wang Ying, Deputy Dean of the UNEP - Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development and the College of Environmental Science and Engineering, presented an overview of their institute. Ms. Fang Xiaozhi, Project Director of Tongji University International Students Office, highlighted internationalization efforts and study-abroad opportunities available at Tongji University.
Dr. Li Boying, Vice Director of the Liberal Arts Office at Tongji University, then chaired an exchange session and shared insights and research findings on the theme of "Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development" with several distinguished scholars. They were Prof. Zhang Chao from the School of Economics and Management, Associate Prof. Dong Nannan from the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Assistant Prof. Li Yan from the College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Assistant Prof. Zhang Chao from the School of Political Science & International Relations, and delegation member Assistant Prof. Sanjay Saha Sonet from the Department of Environmental Science and Disaster Management at Noakhali Science and Technology University.
The session concluded with remarks by delegation leader MD Mizanur Rahaman, Associate Prof. from the Department of Microbiology at the University of Dhaka, and Dr. Liu Zongyi, Director of the Center for South Asia Studies at the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies and Chinese Director of the Centre for China Studies (SIIS-DU).
