Introduction to the faculty

The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Dhaka is considered the most diverse academic branch within the university. Since its establishment on October 2, 1970, the faculty has encompassed a wide range of academic disciplines related to human culture, society, and politics, conducting research both theoretically and based on field data. To foster students' academic and professional development through interdisciplinary knowledge, skills, and values, the faculty currently hosts 16 academic departments. On September 1, 2024, an initiative to distribute relief materials among flood victims in the Comilla, Feni, and Noakhali districts was inaugurated under the auspices of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

A recreational trip for officers and staff was organized by the Faculty of Social Sciences. The trip took place in Cox's Bazar on January 31 and February 1, 2025.

On behalf of the Faculty of Social Sciences, a retreat was organized for the faculty's esteemed teachers on February 18, 2025 (Tuesday) at Dhalis Amber Resort, located in Sirajdikhan Upazila, Munshiganj.

On March 19, 2025 (Wednesday), an Iftar gathering was organized under the initiative of the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences to honor the faculty members of the departments under the faculty.

A seminar was organized by the Faculty of Social Sciences on July 3, 2025, to commemorate the historic month of July. The Honorable Dean delivered a significant address.

On August 4, 2025, a Nescafé Kiosk was launched for students at the Faculty of Social Sciences building, an initiative of the Dean.

On September 7, 2025, an awareness meeting regarding the voting process for the 2025 DUCSU and Hall Union elections was held at the Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium, organized by the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

On October 7, 2025 (Tuesday), a fire-extinguishing drill was conducted for the officers and staff of the Faculty of Social Sciences and its constituent departments, organized by the Honorable Dean and supervised by the Department of Fire Service and Civil Defense.

On April 22, 2026, Professor Dr. Mohammad Mainul Islam assumed office as the new Acting Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. A courtesy meeting with the chairpersons of the departments under the Faculty of Social Sciences was held on April 23, 2026. During this meeting, the former Acting Dean, Professor Dr. Taiyebur Rahman, along with the department chairpersons, welcomed and congratulated the new Dean with floral greetings.

On April 27, 2026, at an orientation meeting for incoming students of the 2025–2026 academic session organized by the University of Dhaka at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), the Honorable Dean delivered an encouraging and inspiring speech to the students.
