The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Dhaka is considered the most diverse academic branch within the university. Since its establishment on October 2, 1970, the faculty has encompassed a wide range of academic disciplines related to human culture, society, and politics, conducting research both theoretically and based on field data. To foster students' academic and professional development through interdisciplinary knowledge, skills, and values, the faculty currently hosts 16 academic departments. These are: the Department of Economics, Department of Political Science, Department of International Relations, Department of Sociology, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Department of Public Administration, Department of Anthropology, Department of Population Sciences, Department of Peace and Conflict Studies, Department of Women and Gender Studies, Department of Development Studies, Department of Television, Film and Photography, Department of Criminology, Department of Communication Disorders, Department of Printing and Publication Studies, and the Department of Japanese Studies. These departments offer various courses at the undergraduate and master's levels, along with diverse research opportunities, which collectively contribute to a collaborative academic environment. This environment, in turn, helps both students and faculty members in achieving their research goals.
The Faculty of Social Sciences is led by a Dean, elected for a term of two (2) years, who oversees all administrative activities such as admission procedures, financial management, and staff governance in accordance with university policies.
Additionally, the Faculty of Social Sciences publishes two academic journals: Social Science Review and Samajik Biggan Patrika (Social Science Journal).
