The Department of Information Science and Library Management is the pioneer of library and information science education and research in Bangladesh which started its journey in 1959.The Department has been acting for the last 60 years by creating a pool of skilled manpower with the objective of collecting, preserving, publicizing and promoting the history and heritage of the nation.
The Department offers a four-year B.A. Honours and a one-year M.A. degree, a two-year M. Phil and a three-year Ph.D. programme. It also runs a 16-months M.A. (Evening) programme.
Classification, Cataloguing, Library networking and Resource Sharing, Information Production and Marketing, Comparative and International Librarianship, Documentation and Information Retrieval, Information Systems and Services, Library Resource Management, Information Literacy, Knowledge Management, Bibliometrics, Digital and Electronic Libraries, User Studies, Library Public Relations etc. are some of the study and research areas covered by the Department.
The Department has state-of-the-art facilities. Notable among those are fully equipped computer lab and smart classrooms, multimedia projectors and air conditioners, etc. The departmental seminar library has a large number of books, thesis and research materials which are managed by an integrated library software. The Department publishes a journal called ‘Bangladesh Journal of Library and Information Science.
