A three-day International Conference on Theory and Application of Statistics organized by the Dhaka University Statistics Department Alumni Association (DUSDAA) began today December 27, 2015 at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban auditorium of the university. DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated it as the chief guest.
President of DUSDAA Prof. Kazi Saleh Ahmed presided over the inaugural session while President of American Statistical Association Prof. Jessica Utts and Dean of the College of Science of Oregon State University, USA Prof. Sastry G. Pantula addressed it as special guests. Chairman of Conference Convening Committee Prof. M Ataharul Islam delivered welcome speech.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique stressed the need for upgrading the quality of statistics and statistical analysis. He said, quality statistics always ensures the transparency, accountability, justifiability, credibility and morality of good governance. Statistical methods and techniques are developing every day around the world. Therefore, we have to adopt all these methods and techniques for data preparation and economic analysis to formulate appropriate plan for development, he mentioned. The VC called upon the statisticians to come forward with zeal and zest to provide beacon light to solve the problems that we confront today due to lack of appropriate data and information in our country. We have to work together to fulfill the dream of our three million martyrs by making Bangladesh a country free from poverty, hunger, malnutrition, illiteracy, fundamentalism and incivility, he added.
It may be mentioned that a total of 300 statisticians from different countries of the world including Bangladesh, USA, UK, Canada, India, Thailand, Australia and Netherlands are participating in the conference.
