Prof. Dr. A.B.M. Obaidul Islam is a distinguished academic, researcher, and higher education leader in Bangladesh. With a career spanning several decades, he has made significant contributions to physics research, university teaching, and academic administration. His expertise lies in materials science and photovoltaic solar cell research, with a strong focus on thin film technology and semiconductor materials.
He has held several prominent leadership roles, including Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University and Chairman of the Department of Physics at the University of Dhaka. Known for his strategic vision, integrity, and commitment to excellence, he has played a vital role in shaping higher education policies and institutional development in Bangladesh.
Prof. Islam began his academic career as a Lecturer at the University of Dhaka in 1994 and steadily progressed through the ranks to become a Professor in 2008. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he has served as an adjunct faculty member at several leading universities in Bangladesh.
His administrative leadership includes serving as Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University and Chairman of the Department of Physics at the University of Dhaka. He has also contributed to university governance through roles in syndicates, senates, and national academic bodies.
Prof. Islam has conducted extensive research in thin film materials and solar energy applications. He has completed postdoctoral research in prestigious institutions across Europe and Asia, including the Netherlands, United Kingdom, and Germany.
He has published around 40 research articles in reputed national and international journals and has contributed to academic discourse through conferences, seminars, and workshops worldwide. He has also supervised more than 30 postgraduate students in Bangladesh and abroad.
Prof. Islam has been actively involved in numerous academic and professional organizations. He has served in leadership roles in teacher associations, alumni organizations, and international academic bodies, including the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).
