Dhaka University (DU) authorities have received taka 10 lac donation further to enhance the capital of ‘Buddhist Scholar Prof. Dr. Sukomal Barua Trust Fund’under  Pali and Buddhist Studies Department of the university. Prof. Dr. Sukomal Barua’s Daughter Sanghamitra Barua Manoshi handed over a cheque for Tk. 10 lac to DU Treasurer Prof. Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin today September 21, 2016 at the Vice-Chancellor’s office to enhance the capital.

Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique, ‘Rabindra Chair’ of DU Prof. Dr. Mahua Mukherjee,  Provost of Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall Prof. Dr. Sabita Rezwana Rahman, Prof. Dr. Sukomal Barua, some other faculties from various departments, relatives and family members of the donor and leaders of the Buddhist Community were present on this occasion.

Out of the income of this donation, every year one meritorious student who will secure the highest CGPA in Masters final examination from the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies of DU will be awarded ‘Buddhist Scholar Prof. Dr. Sukomal Barua Gold Medal.’ Besides, 3 more students of the department will be given scholarship.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Arefin Siddique thanked the donor for her donation. He also hoped that the students of the university would be highly benefited and encouraged from this donation.

It may be mentioned that Dr. Sukomal Barua, Professor of the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies of DU was born in Dhemsha Village under Satkaniya Upazilla of Chittagong District in 1955. He is the third son of late Dr. Ganash Chandra Barua and late Buddhimati Barua. Prof. Barua was awarded ‘Ekushey Padak’ in 2006 for his outstanding contribution to education and research.
