A two-day long regional workshop on “Emissions from Brick Kilns” jointly organized by the University of Dhaka, US Department of State and ARCADIS, USA began today January 20, 2016 at Mukarram Hussain Khundakar Biggan Bhaban of Dhaka University (DU). DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated the workshop as the chief guest.
Acting Dean of the Faculty of Science of DU Prof. Dr. Md. Mubarak Hossain, Chairperson of the Department of Chemistry Prof. Dr. Nilufar Nahar, Science Advisor of the Department of State, USA Dr. Ellen Connorton and Representative from US Embassy, Dhaka Ms. Catherine Seagravs also addressed the inaugural session. Co-Chair of the Workshop Organizing Committee and Professor of the Department of Chemistry of DU Dr. Abdus Salam delivered welcome speech while Vice-President of ARCADIS, USA Dr. Wojciech Jozewicz gave vote of thanks.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique stressed the need for creating awareness among the people on air pollutant emissions from brick kilns. He said, black carbon emission from brick manufacturing industry makes bad impact on our environment. Therefore, we have to produce alternative to brick to save the public health as well as environment. He thanked the US Department of State and ARCADIS, USA for providing cooperation to organize the workshop on such an important issue. He also recalled the all out support and cooperation of American people and media during our Liberation War in 1971.
It may be mentioned that a total of 100 researchers from various countries including Bangladesh, USA, India, Nepal, Thailand, Bhutan and Sri Lanka are participating in the workshop.
