The Bose Lecture-2016 was held today January 07, 2016 at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University (DU). The Bose Centre for Advanced Study and Research in Natural Sciences of DU organized this lecture to mark the 122nd birth anniversary of renowned scientist Professor Sateyendra Nath Bose.
Director of Bose Centre Professor Shamima Choudhury presided over the function while Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) of DU Prof. Dr. Nasreen Ahmad addressed it as the chief guest. Former Professor of DU Physics Department Dr. Mohammad Ibrahim delivered key-note speech. Dean of the Faculty of science of DU Prof Dr. Md. Abdul Aziz, Chairman of the Department of Theoretical Physics Professor Dr. Arshad Momen and President of Bangladesh Physical Society Professor AA Ziauddin Ahmad also addressed the function.
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) of DU Prof. Dr. Nasreen Ahmad urged the young generation to conduct scientific research by following the ideal of late Prof. S. N. Bose. She said, Prof. Satyendra Nath Bose is best known for his work on quantum mechanics. He also made outstanding contributions to the foundation of Bose-Einstein Statistics, the Pro-VC further said. Half of all the known class of particles has been named as “bosons” to honor him by another great Nobel Laureate theoretical physicist Paul Dirac, she added. Prof. S.N. Bose made Dhaka University known to the world only within few years of its establishment in 1921, the Pro-VC mentioned. She also said, S. N. Bose had a wide range of interest in varied fields including physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology. He was one of the founding faculty members of DU Physics Department, she mentioned.
It may be mentioned that Prof. S.N Bose was born on January 1, 1894 and died on February 4, 1974.
