The Department of Geography and Environment, University of Dhaka, in collaboration with Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), jointly celebrated World Environment Day 2025, with Jagannath University and Stamford University Bangladesh (SUB) participating as associate partners. This year’s event centered around the globally significant theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” aiming to raise awareness about the alarming impacts of plastic waste on the environment.
The program began with participant registration at Qazi Motahar Hossain Bhaban, warmly welcoming enthusiastic students and faculty members. A sudden rain shower added a refreshing touch to the day, creating a memorable atmosphere as participants gathered eagerly.
To commemorate the occasion, T-shirts were distributed among all attendees. The inauguration was graced by speeches from distinguished guests, including the Chairman of the Department Dr. M. Shahidul Islam and Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, Executive Director of TIB, who highlighted the urgency of addressing plastic pollution.
A vibrant rally followed, moving from Qazi Motahar Hossain Bhaban to the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) premises. This symbolic procession drew public attention to environmental hazards and the importance of sustainable practices. Subsequently, a plastic clean-up activity was held at TSC, where participants were divided into 15 teams to collect plastic waste for recycling. This hands-on initiative not only engaged participants actively but also emphasized the significance of community-based environmental responsibility.
The program concluded with insightful remarks from Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, honorable Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dhaka. Other invited guests and faculty members also delivered speeches on environmental conservation and sustainable waste management.
