Conference on “Philosophy for Children” Held at University of Dhaka
The Department of Philosophy, University of Dhaka, in collaboration with the G. C. Dev Centre for Philosophical Studies and the Centre for Moral Development, organized a day-long conference titled “Philosophy for Children” on April 18, 2026.
The conference was inaugurated by the Honorable Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dhaka, while the Dean of the Faculty of Arts attended as Special Guest. In his inaugural remarks, the Vice-Chancellor observed that “philosophy is essential for nurturing critical thinking and ethical awareness among children.”
The event brought together teachers, students, and alumni from the University of Dhaka, Rajshahi University, Jagannath University, Green University of Bangladesh, Kishoreganj University, and affiliated colleges of Dhaka. The program featured a series of academic sessions with paper presentations and discussions on philosophical inquiry in childhood, moral development, and the integration of philosophy into educational curricula.
Participants emphasized the importance of culturally grounded approaches, noting that “indigenous narratives and dialogical methods can significantly enhance children’s reflective thinking.” The discussions also highlighted both the challenges and possibilities of introducing philosophy at the school level in Bangladesh.
The conference concluded with an engaging exchange of ideas among scholars and students, reaffirming the Department’s commitment to advancing philosophy for children as a vital component of holistic education.
