Twelve meritorious students of various departments under the Faculty of Biological Sciences and the Faculty of Earth & Environmental Sciences of Dhaka University (DU) have been awarded ‘Nagao Natural Environment Foundation (NEF) Scholarship of Japan’ for their outstanding academic results. Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan distributed scholarships among the students as chief guest at a function today January 21, 2026 at VC’s meeting room of the university.

Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences Prof. Dr. Md. Humayun Kabir, Chairman of Botany Department Prof. Dr. Ashfaque Ahmed, Coordinator of DU NEF Scholarship program Prof. Dr. Mohammad Zabed Hossain and Prof. Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain Bhuiyan of Geology Department were present on this occasion.

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan urged the students to play an effective role in strengthening social unity as well as maintaining peace and harmony in the society. He also called upon them to work together for creating awareness among the people on conservation of environment.

Recipients of NEF Scholarship are Jannatul Maowa Momita (Botany), Sayeeda Farha Shahrin (Botany), Suhana Mourin (Botany), Md. Majharul Islam (Fisheries), Zinnatul Islam Prottasha (Disaster Science & Climate Resilience), Marufa Parvin Karina (Disaster Science & Climate Resilience), Joyita Saha (Microbiology), Md. Tahsin Reza Anonto (Soil, Water and Environment), Mst. Sara Moni (Geography and Environment), Md. Rajib (Meteorology), Monisha Dey (Oceanography) and Noshin Tasfia Muna (Zoology).

It may be mentioned that the Nagao Natural Environment Foundation (NEF), founded in 1989 to promote nature conservation in developing countries, mainly in the Asia-Pacific region. To achieve this, NEF provides scholarship to students of different universities who are willing to study subject related to environmental conservation. Every year, DU NEF committee invites application from the students of the Faculty of Biological Sciences and the Faculty of Earth & Environmental Sciences of DU. Later, this committee selects the recipients of the scholarship through a transparent process. 

Scholarship recipients are expected to major in the fields of natural sciences, acquire knowledge about nature and conservation, and apply that knowledge in their future work and life.
