Expresses willingness to provide support in development of higher education and research
A six-member delegation led by Mr. Nishi Rizuki, Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) called on Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam today September 01, 2026 at the VC’s meeting room of the university. Other team members were Professor Emeritus of Kumamoto University Dr. Tsuyoshi Usagawa, Senior Advisor of Human Development Department, JICA Dr. Usagawa Tsuyoshi, Saeri Muto, Mochizuki Hiroshi and Otani Onri.
Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy of DU Prof. Dr. Md. Selim Reza, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Prof. Dr. Saifuddin Md. Tareeq, Director of Centre for Advanced Research in Sciences (CARS) Prof. Dr. Aminul I. Talukder, Chairman of the Department of Pharmacy Prof. Dr. Jakir Ahmed Chowdhury, Chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry Prof. Dr. Shaila Kabir, Chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology Prof. Dr. Shimul Halder, Chairman of the Department of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering Dr. Shugata Ahmed and Director of Public Relations Office Md. Rafiqul Islam were present on this occasion.
During the meeting they discussed about implementation of a project titled ‘Potential Yen Loan Project to support Higher Education in Bangladesh’ funded by JICA. JICA delegation members expressed their willingness to provide support and cooperation in establishing eco-system and capacity building at DU for promoting higher education and research. They also expressed their eagerness to give support in development of the research skills. enhancing the quality of higher education and research as well as strengthening collaboration between academia and industry. They stressed the need for undertaking more joint collaborative academic and research programs among Dhaka University and different universities in Japan as well as strengthening network among regional and local universities. JICA team leader presented a draft proposal of the project in this regard.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam thanked the JICA delegation members for undertaking this project. He expressed his willingness to work with JICA to promote academic and research activities at DU. He said, the friendly ties between Bangladesh and Japan have been prevailing for long years. Terming Japan as one of the largest development partners of Bangladesh the VC said, we need more support from Japan in enhancing lab based education on AI, third language, biological sciences, software engineering, pharmacy and environmental sciences. He sought cooperation from JICA in undertaking ‘Lab to Lab’ collaboration programs among Dhaka University and different universities in Japan for conducting research effectively. He also sought cooperation from JICA in providing financial support to maintain machineries at different laboratories of DU including CARS.
