A five-member delegation led by Mr. Sugahara Kiyoyuki, Director of Financial Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan called on Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam today September 14, 2026 at the VC’s meeting room of the university. Other team members were Mr. Harada Takashi, Director of Development Policy Division and Mr. Tamagawa Eisuke, Director for Budget of the same ministry, Mr. Aoyagi Yu, Second Secretary of the Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh and Mr. Suzuki Kazuya, Director General of Treasury, Finance and Accounting Department of JICA.
Director of the Institute of Modern Languages (IML) of DU Prof. Mohammad Absar Kamal, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Ansarul Alam and Director of Public Relations Office Md. Rafiqul Islam were present on this occasion.
During the meeting they discussed various issues including expansion of Japanese Language Program at IML. They stressed the need for undertaking more joint collaborative academic and research programs among Dhaka University and different universities in Japan as well as strengthening ongoing joint collaborative programs among renowned universities of the two countries.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam said, the friendly ties between Bangladesh and Japan have been prevailing for long years. Terming Japan as one of the largest development partners of Bangladesh the VC said, we need more support from Japan in enhancing lab based education on AI, third language, biological sciences, software engineering, pharmacy and environmental sciences. He sought cooperation from Japanese delegation in increasing number of scholarship for DU students to pursue higher study in Japan. He stressed the need for development and expansion of Japanese language program at DU to strengthen bilateral ties between Bangladesh and Japan. He also sought cooperation from delegation members in bringing native teachers to teach Japanese Language at IML.
